Your Easy First Step into Table Tea Ceremony.

You Don’t Need It All From the Start.
Your Easy First Step into Table Tea Ceremony.

Thinking about trying Table Tea Ceremony, but worried you need to buy every utensil first?

Good news — you don’t need everything from day one. Many items can be replaced with things you already have at home, so you can take that first step with ease.

Essential Items

Tea whisk (Chasen)

Tea bowl (Chawan)

Items You Can Substitute

Tea scoop (Chashaku)
A small spoon works just as well

Waste water bowl (Kensui)
A café au lait bowl or similarly deep bowl works well

Tea caddy (Natsume)
A sugar pot or similar small container works fine

Tea strainer
A fine-mesh kitchen strainer works just as well

Items You Only Need to Watch

Silk cloth (Fukusa)

Tea cloth (Chakin)

These will be demonstrated by the instructor, so you don’t need to prepare them yourself.

About Matcha

Please arrange (purchase) your own matcha powder in advance. If you have time, sifting it through a tea strainer beforehand will help the lesson go smoothly.
